There is currently a lot of hype on social media about a supposedly new surgical technique for breast augmentation called Mia Femtech. In this technique, a folded breast implant is inserted under the breast via the axilla (armpit) using an applicator. In addition, this operation is to be performed under local anaesthesia.
New approaches and innovations are always welcome in surgery. However, they should only be introduced once they have been proven by serious research studies.
Independent studies, which are carried out over a longer period of time, are used to find out what risks are involved and how sustainable the results are.
To date, no independent studies have been carried out on the Mia Femtech surgical technique. As a result, there is a lot of uncertainty about the risks and long-term results.
It is well known from many studies that access via the axilla (armpit) carries a higher risk of infection and capsular fibrosis. In addition, the „blind“ dissection (tissue preparation) used in the Mia Femtech technique greatly increases the risk of post-operative bleeding.
Due to the folding of the implants required for insertion, only very narrow implants can be used with the Mia Femtech surgical technique. If implants that are too narrow are used in the chest, the results are often very unnatural, as the breast cannot be filled up evenly everywhere.
Due to the earlier use of similar techniques, in which surgery was still performed via the armpit hollow, all well-trained and experienced surgeons are aware that it is very difficult or even impossible to fully control the position of the implant.
In the past, this often led to the implants not being positioned in the right place or slipping out of place again after the operation, which occasionally even led to breast deformation.
We know from former patients that some clinics in Germany and abroad are using the Mia Femtech hype as a “bait offer”.
The scam works in such a way that patients are lured to a consultation appointment by this tempting offer, where they are then told that the Mia Femtech surgical technique is not an option in their specific case - of course with the aim of then treating them with a conventional surgical technique.
Until serious studies on the Mia Femtech technique (complications, long-term results) have been published, it is a marketing ploy and may even be dangerous for patients.
We advise against this method – just as we would never offer breast surgery of any kind under the cheaper option of local anesthesia.
Even if the safety of the Mia Femtech surgical technique is proven by reliable studies in the future, the technique can only be used in very selected cases.
