Combined breast lift and breast augmentation – when and how?

There are various factors that lead to a sagging breast: Age, pregnancies, predisposition, weight fluctuations. If women are bothered by this breast shape and would like an improvement, there are various procedures available. If the breast is disproportionately large, a breast reduction is recommended. This procedure is always accompanied by a breast lift. If the breast volume is well proportioned, a breast lift can be performed without loss of volume. However, if you want a lift with a simultaneous increase in volume, you can consider an augmentation mastopexy, i.e. a lift with simultaneous enlargement using implants.

With this procedure, which involves two opposing principles, namely a reduction of the skin mantle on the one hand and a volume increase on the other, opinions among plastic surgeons are divided when it comes to the choice of procedure. Some surgeons recommend only performing a tightening at first and then performing an augmentation after a year if still desired. Others do not see this two-stage procedure as necessary and carry out the procedure unilaterally. The justification for a two-stage procedure is seen in the fact that the combined procedure has a higher complication rate than a two-stage procedure.

A review of the specialist literature shows that the complication rate for a breast augmentation is lower than that of a breast lift, but that of a combined lift/augmentation is lower than that of the two individual procedures combined.

Based on this consideration, we offer the combined procedure at Breast Atelier. The planning and surgical procedure is certainly more complicated than a two-stage operation and therefore requires more experience. In the case of a combined procedure, you have to reckon with 10 to 15 % follow-up operations. The most common procedure is a re-tightening. This is primarily due to the poorer tissue quality and lack of elasticity of the skin in sagging breasts.

It therefore makes sense to obtain thorough information about the possible procedures if you have sagging breasts and to be clear about whether enhancement is really advisable. You should seek advice from experienced plastic surgeons.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes around 2.5 hours. As it is always necessary to relocate the areola during a lift, scars will result around the areola, vertically and in the crease under the breast. Possible complications include infection, post-operative bleeding, implant displacement with asymmetry, capsular fibrosis and secondary sagging of the tissue, which can result in subsequent corrections.

The cost of the operation is around CHF 14,500 (depending on the complexity of the procedure) and is therefore higher than for a standard procedure due to the complexity of the procedure.
