Breast surgery is an important decision and before the surgical procedure it is beneficial to plan everything so that the time after the operation goes as smoothly as possible. I have summarized the most important points for you in the following text.

The first aspect to consider is childcare – if you have any. If this is the case, you know from experience that the little ones have a fascinating talent: they can completely block out certain facts and this includes the part where mom needs some rest.

So it's worth organizing a babysitter to look after you during the operation and the two or three days that follow. With or without children, it is also a good idea to inform a caregiver and appoint them as a driver to take you home safely after the operation. After anesthesia, you are not allowed to drive for 24 hours.

„The household (unfortunately) does not run away!“

An important point to consider is a household helper. And yes, I can tell you that it is sometimes difficult to accept help and we are used to going shopping during a snowstorm even if we have the flu. But now you are in first place without any ifs and buts, because the argument for this is unbeatable: A stress-free recovery period promotes the healing process.

Make a list of your medications, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins and supplements. Your anesthetist will need to check this list to ensure that there are no interactions with any medications you may need to take during and after surgery. It is therefore advisable to send this list to the Breast Atelier in advance and point out any special aspects.

It is important that you are in good health before the operation. I don't mean that you can climb the north face of the Eiger in an hour, but a healthy diet and sufficient sleep are the best prerequisites to ensure that your body is well prepared for the operation. If you suffer from a chronic illness, you should definitely provide this information to the Breast Atelier and, if possible, also send documents from your last examination and laboratory results.

„Is a doctor's certificate recognized?

Since the procedure is a very personal matter for some patients, it is worth planning holidays if you do not want to inform your supervisor about the operation. According to the law, the employer is not obliged to recognize the absence from an elective procedure, but there are exceptions here too and some employers are very understanding.

I personally recommend a week of time off, even two if necessary. The important thing is simply to listen to your feelings and not rush back into your commitments too soon. Take time to recover without stress, so the entire healing process often takes less time than if you rush straight back into everyday life.

Finally, there are a few small but important details:

Choose comfortable clothing for the day of the operation and for the time afterwards, ideally with a full front.

Before the procedure, buy a few tasty dishes that are easy to prepare, a pack of wipes so that you can freshen up without effort and a dry shampoo – if you have children, you are probably already well equipped.

Adjust the headboard of your bed so that your upper body is slightly elevated at the beginning, which is ideal and comfortable, especially during the first few nights.

It doesn't hurt if you pick out an exciting series, put a cuddly blanket on the couch and have some chocolate in stock so that you can relax and recover over the next few days, true to the motto: strength lies in rest!
