A new beauty trend from Hollywood has also made its way to Switzerland: Nipples that are visible through the T-shirt. Stars like Kim Kardashian openly present this look on the red carpet. She even goes so far as to launch a bra with integrated, piercing nipples. Her message: "No matter how warm it is – this will always make you look like you're cold."
However, for many women, this effect is not enough. Instead of relying on special bras, some women have their nipples injected with hyaluronic acid to achieve a permanent look. But what is behind this beauty trend and how safe is the treatment?
During the treatment, hyaluronic acid is injected into the nipples. This gives the nipples more volume and makes them more visible. The hyaluronic acid plumps up the underlying tissue, making the nipples appear more prominent. This effect is visible under clothing, even without a bra.
As the nipple area is small and sensitive, a fine needle is used. Many hyaluronic fillers also contain a local anaesthetic, which makes the procedure relatively painless. For patients who are particularly sensitive to pain, a numbing ointment can be applied in advance.
Although the treatment is similar to other hyaluronic acid applications, it still carries specific risks. As the milk ducts in the nipple area contain bacteria, there is an increased risk of infection. In addition, the filling material can block or compress the milk ducts. This can lead to painful inflammation or abscess formation. Particularly critical: expectant mothers or women who wish to have children are advised against the treatment, as blocked or scarred milk ducts can permanently impair the ability to breastfeed.
There is a further risk if too much hyaluronic acid is injected at once. As the nipples only have limited space, blood circulation can be impaired. In the worst case scenario, tissue damage could occur. However, such cases are rare.
The durability of hyaluronic acid in the nipple area can vary. As the nipples are not moved much compared to other areas of the body, the effect usually lasts longer - up to six to twelve months. The filling material is then broken down by the body, which is why the treatment must be repeated.
Our FMH specialists in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery advise against hyaluronic acid treatments for the nipples. The risks – in particular the risk of permanent impairment of the ability to breastfeed – üoutweigh the short-term trend advantage. In addition, the results are only temporary, as the filling material is broken down by the body. A new treatment would therefore be necessary every three to four months.
For women who suffer from inverted nipples or want to permanently change the shape of their nipples, there is a much more sustainable solution. Surgical correction of the nipples offers long-term results without the need for constant touch-up treatments. This procedure can be performed under local anaesthesia and offers a permanent solution.
