Several large registry studies from Scandinavia consistently show that women who had breast reduction surgery developed breast cancer less frequently than comparable control groups. The observed risk reduction is around 30 % overall and - depending on age and follow-up time - ranges up to around 50 %. Probable mechanism: By removing breast tissue, fewer potentially malignant cells are present.
An additional advantage lies in the histological examination of the removed tissue. This allows precursors or pathological changes to be detected and treated at an early stage. This early diagnosis increases safety immediately after the operation, even if it only partially explains the long-term cancer rate.
In a Swedish cohort of over 31,000 women, the standardized incidence ratio (SIR) was 0.72 - around 28 % lower than expected. A long-term follow-up confirmed a similar rate (SIR 0.71). Danish registry data showed stronger effects of up to 50 % in some cases, particularly in women over 50 years of age. More recent Austrian analyses confirm the trend, but their statistical interpretation is limited due to the small number of cases.
No. Breast reduction is not a preventive procedure in the true sense of the word and does not replace regular screening. The individual risk remains. Mammography or sonography should be continued in accordance with the usual recommendations - especially in the case of a family history or genetic predisposition.
The personal risk of breast cancer depends on several factors: Age, hormonal balance, menopausal status, lifestyle, body weight and genetics. Being overweight is considered a risk factor, as fatty tissue produces oestrogen. Many patients report more freedom of movement and enjoyment of exercise after a reduction - which also contributes to a healthier body weight in the long term.
In addition to the potential risk reduction, the procedure often improves posture, pain symptoms and quality of life. Many women describe a new feeling of lightness and activity. This means that the operation relieves both physical and psychological stress - and can indirectly promote general health.
