from Dr. med. Nicholas Waughlock
Theoretically, local anesthesia is possible for breast surgery. However, we strongly advise against anesthetizing the entire breast area locally. To do this, it is necessary to pierce between the ribs about twelve times on each side of the breast in order to numb all the nerves involved. As this is not only time-consuming but also very painful, the patient must also be sedated with a sedative via infusion, i.e. put into a deep sleep. During the operation, she is therefore sleepy and not fully conscious, but still notices a lot. Apart from the aforementioned discomfort, there is a life-threatening risk of a collapsed lung (pneumothorax). If you inject just 1-2 mm too deep, this can have very serious consequences.
Since local anaesthesia is performed by the surgeon himself, the costs of an anaesthetist are eliminated for the clinic. However, while the surgeon has to concentrate on the operation, the patient's condition is hardly monitored. This often works well, but in exceptional cases it can end catastrophically.
For these reasons, breast operations are always performed under general anesthesia at Breast Atelier. The risk of complications is very low thanks to state-of-the-art anesthesia methods, which are carried out exclusively by a specialist in anesthesia. Anesthesia technology has developed enormously in the last 10 years and the side effects are much lower than in the past. General anesthesia is more comfortable and very safe for both the patient and the surgeon.
Performing breast surgery under local anaesthesia involves a number of risks and is only lucrative for the clinic, if at all, thanks to the cost savings.
