Procedure of the operation

On the day of the operation, you will arrive at the Plastic Surgery Pyramid day clinic 45 minutes before the operation. After your arrival, you will be prepared for the operation by our experienced team. The procedure takes about 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.

The excess skin, fat and glandular tissue is removed from the lower breast area, then the breast is reshaped internally and the skin above it is tightened. The areola is reduced in size and lifted to its new position.

The incision for breast reduction runs around the areola, vertically downwards. A small incision is also required in the breast crease.

The incision: T-method (anchor incision)

In this technique, the incision is made around the areola, extended vertically downwards and joined with a horizontal incision in the inframammary fold. This allows excess skin to be removed both vertically and horizontally, so that the breast can be tightened and reshaped in both directions. At the same time, the nipple is moved into the optimal aesthetic position.

The T-method offers optimal conditions for precise remodeling of the breast shape, the result of which is already clearly visible once the swelling has subsided. It should be noted that the ability to breastfeed may be restricted and changes in nipple sensitivity may occasionally occur.

After the operation

Immediately after the operation, the breast is immobilized with a special breast bandage and evenly compressed. The higher pressure compared to a bra can reduce the risk of secondary bleeding.

You must remain in the day clinic for at least two hours for monitoring, after which you may be collected.

Aftercare and risks

The day after the operation, the first dressing check takes place in the Breast Atelier and a sports bra is fitted, which should be worn consistently for six weeks. If a drain was placed during the operation, this is usually also removed the next day.

After breast surgery, swelling or temporary loss of sensation may occur, which in most cases disappears within a few weeks. However, it can take several months before the original sensation returns completely. After around six to eight weeks, the traces of the operation are usually largely healed.

Assumption of costs

If you already have a cost approval from your health insurance company or if the following criteria apply to you, the operation unfortunately cannot take place at the Breast Atelier. We cannot bill any services that are covered by health insurance.

In this case, we recommend a consultation at the Plastic Surgery Pyramid.

Breast reductions that are covered by health insurance are performed on an inpatient basis at the Privatklinik Bethanien. Supplementary insurance (semi-private or private) is recommended for the stay, as basic insurance only covers a small part of the costs.

Criteria for a possible cost approval

Whether the health insurance company will cover a breast reduction is assessed on an individual basis and can vary depending on the insurance company.

As a rule, the following conditions apply:

  • Repeated consultations with a doctor due to back, neck or shoulder pain
  • Conservative therapies (physiotherapy, back training, medication) without sufficient effect
  • Persistent physical complaints
  • BMI < 27 (normal weight)
  • Planned tissue reduction from approx. 500 g per breast side

We will be happy to answer any questions you may have about cost coverage by health insurance companies. You can find more information on this topic under "When does health insurance cover breast surgery?"

Frequently asked questions about breast reduction

If back or neck pain is caused by incorrect weight distribution due to large, heavy breasts, many patients report a significant improvement in their symptoms immediately after the operation. However, as back and neck pain can also occur independently of breast size, it is not possible to make a prognosis in this regard. Experience has shown that breast reduction leads to relief from back pain in most cases.

In addition to the risks associated with any surgery, breast reduction can cause circulatory disorders in the nipples, which can lead to loss of pigmentation or scarring. Severe circulatory disorders of the breast tissue or nipples, which can result in tissue loss, occur only rarely. In rare cases, permanent loss of sensation in the breast or nipples may also occur.

Nerves can regenerate slowly. As a rule, sensation returns within one to two years. However, the extent of regeneration varies and also depends on age. Permanent sensory disturbances are therefore possible.

The symptoms and complaints are decisive for the indication, not the cup size.

No, breast reduction surgery is possible at any age. Excessive breast growth can occur as early as puberty and cause corresponding discomfort. On the other hand, breasts that are too large and heavy can also lead to back and neck problems in older age.

During breast reduction surgery, the nipple is not completely detached, but the excess fat and glandular tissue is removed and thus damaged. Breastfeeding ability may therefore be impaired by such an operation.

The 3D visualization computer needs various points on the chest in order to calculate the breast simulation. Example points are the nipple, the edge of the areola, the boundary of the breast in the middle, on the outside, and in the area of the underbust fold. However, the point in the area of the inframammary fold is not visible in the case of sagging and/or large breasts, which is why the simulation calculation cannot be performed.

In principle, the incapacity to work lasts for approximately 4 days, but depending on the activity, it can also be longer.
